DigiWorld market growth as a whole remains moderate, and below GDP growth, but still solid – sustained by internet services and emerging Asian markets.
Increasing by 4.7% in 2017, global DigiWorld markets continue to grow at a steady pace, albeit slower than the economy as a whole. Since taking a hit in 2014, growth has remained sluggish for ICT services.
Growth not aligned with the global economy's revival If the deployment of electronic communications infrastructure and the steady rise in usage are creating value for the economy as a whole, it is equally clear that the two are not evolving at the same pace. In 2015 and 2016, global ICT markets enjoyed an uptick in [...]
Growth in the different DigiWorld sectors in 2017 ranged from 1.1% for telecommunications services to a remarkable 15.7% for Internet services. In between the two, IT services and digital content markets each gained around 6% – the former slightly less and the latter slightly more.
This year, we have chosen to confine DigiWorld markets to digital service businesses. The hardware and devices that are used to run them are not factored in as such. They are nevertheless vital components of the solutions delivered by service providers. They are intermediate goods, so automatically part of the value-added. This is true of [...]
North America still dominates the global digital world, generating more than 37% of all DigiWorld revenue. Next in line, Europe continues its slow downwards slide while Asia/Pacific is gaining strength, thanks to the development of new industrial economies and emerging markets in the region. Meanwhile Latin America and Africa/the Middle East together account for scarcely 10% of the global market.
European and North American markets losing ground If the health of Europe’s digital markets has been improving over the past several years, their growth rate is still below what we are seeing in the rest of the world. Their contribution to the economy as a whole has been decreasing steadily, even if less dramatically than [...]
With annual growth only just over 1% in 2017, global telecom markets are still feeling the squeeze. The slight uptick enjoyed by the global market as a whole is due largely to an improved situation in Europe where, after several years of recession, the regional market reported a mild and relative increase.
Even though one swallow does not make a summer… the revived growth in the European telecom services markets in 2017 is worth highlighting. It is highly unlikely that this foreshadows a sizeable surge, however: the growth rate in Europe is still below the global average, and the medium-term outlook is middling. So it will be [...]
Businesses’ digital transformation is helping to bolster the IT services market where growth today, and no doubt into the medium term, stands at over 5% per annum. The number of new opportunities being opened up for the sector is matched only by the number of challenges it faces.
North America still by far the biggest market The global IT services and software market grew by 5.7% in 2017, to reach 1.167 billion EUR. North America still accounts for half of global demand in terms of value (47.2%), in addition to enjoying a slightly higher than average growth rate. In Europe, and Asia/Pacific to [...]
Content sectors are each at very different stages in the digitisation process. But all are feeling the impact of changes in consumer behaviour and business models. Veteran players are being cut out of the loop, to the benefit of new online players, but the issue of growth is clearly still very much alive.
Sectors in turmoil The content industry as a whole is having to deal with major upheavals created by the digitisation of content, its distribution and consumption. In addition to the rapid adoption of new consumption methods, which are making traditional ones obsolete to some degree, the advent of new players aggregating and distributing content online, [...]
Internet services continue to represent an increasingly large share of digital markets, often at the expense of veteran players. But their impact extends much further than just direct monetisation. The heavyweights’ platform strategies enable them to leverage a handful of services to expand their product line.
The Internet services market continues to grow at a steady clip. With average annual growth estimated at 11.5% for the coming years, it is expected to reach 730 billion EUR in 2021 and represent 20% of DigiWorld markets (7% in 2014). A handful of, notably cloud, services make up the bulk of the market. If [...]
